Modern Witch Guide to Scrying

Scrying is one of the oldest divination methods while being a skill that takes some practice and learning to complete but, once mastered, is invaluable for prediction practice. Scrying is the act of seeing images within a mirror, crystal bowl, reflection, or in anything that can reflect an image. Many people, when they think of fortune-tellers, looking into their crystal ball, that is scrying. Still, very few fortune tellers use scrying in reality, and there is much knowledge needing discovering in most of the witchcraft written world on how to do it thoroughly.

Many witches prefer to choose divination tools like tarot or oracle cards, palmistry, or even pendulums are most popular than scrying. A witch must be in a meditative state of channeling and casting to correctly complete the scrying ritual and sometimes takes hours to get a clear message. Many fortune-tellers do not use scrying anymore because it is an intricate method to tell fortunes and can be very daunting to learn. Scrying can be exciting and fun to perform and see what visuals the universe tries to convey and is also great medicine as a meditative state.

Scrying practiced as hydromancy, second sight, vision gazing, or oculomancy has its roots in the most ancient magickal practices. Humans have been performing some forms of Scrying since the beginning of civilization and are the core of magickal practice. Still, it is about seeing into the future and only speculating about the current path’s forwarding momentum. The words crying is from Old English describe which means to reveal, and scrying can reveal much about what the witch or the client is trying to get out of their lives. It usually involves having 2nd sight, perceiving things that we cannot see through our ordinary senses. Scrying was mentioned in the written word first in a 10th-century Persian poem but was outlawed quickly by Christian societies as a link to the devil. Many cultures have used different scrying forms where the Native Americans used smoke signals and the wind leaving symbols. The ancient Egyptians used oil gazing to gain wisdom into the future, and numerous cultures have used fire gazing for centuries to relax meditate. Neo-pagan cultures mainly use scrying in modern times, but it helps all beings get in touch with the realm of our soul and unconscious minds.

Try many of these different forms of scrying, as you might find you enjoy one more than the other. It is important to remember that Scrying is all based on your own experience. Hence, if you interpret something different from another person, understand each person is on their path, for this practice, and they have their distinct meaning to what they see. Scrying is fun to do for many purposes, but seeing into the future has always been the most popular channel in scrying.

Beginning scrying can be good to use a bowl of water or a mirror to ensure that it is something you want to continue doing. Many witches never invest in a crystal ball as a bowl of water can scry for long periods with little investment. Only those who wish to practice scrying on a larger scale invest in crystal balls or scrying mirrors. Or those witches who want to practice multiple scrying methods at once should look into get multiple scrying objects. There are many different scrying methods, and it is beneficial to try many to get the entire message you seek. Also, be open to many additional messages coming through as fine-tuning exact messages will happen over time to a specific goal. At first a witch many have a hard time channeling select messages as the issue with the mind and spirit tending to wander with new experiences. Just stay patient, and the second sight will come with time and use of the scrying methods below.

Using a Scrying Mirror

When Scrying with a mirror, the reflecting object can be made up of different materials that reflect like glass or crystal like clear quartz or obsidian that are both very reflective. The surface needs a good reflection and can be used in a dark room with candlelight or outside to see nature’s reflections. The images will be more a shadow work and ritual nature in a dark room, whereas outside will reflect cloud or animal familiars trying to show a message. Whichever method you would like to experience in the current scrying ritual with a mirror, it is best to sit with the mirror reflecting for an extended period in one space and see what messages arise. A significant benefit to a mirror in scrying is it is so portable and makes scrying done on the go and in emergencies.

Crystal Gazing

The crystal ball is one of the most recognized symbols in all divination practice, and for a good reason, as it is the most common form of scrying is a crystal ball. The crystal ball is one of the popular items to use for crystal scrying. Still, similar to mirror scrying, other crystals like obsidian spheres are popular to use, but many witches and give just as clear of a reflection as a crystal ball but with obsidian protection. Scrying with a crystal ball is similar to the scrying mirror, and note the images and messages after the ritual to analyze the entire message that came through and what they may form in your witchy mind.

Dripping Wax in Hydromancy

When performing the hydromancy ritual, pour candle wax into the water bowl to see if images or messages form to decipher. Witches have used wax drippings to see messages or writing from beyond for centuries, and it can be done onto a scrying mirror if desired. This act of dripping onto a mirror will eventually dull the reflective surface if not cleaned off thoroughly and adequately after scrying ritual.

Fire Gazing

Anyone who has ever sat at a fire can attest to the trance-like state staring at a fire can cause for even the most minor magickal beings. Our natural connection to the fire can put all humans in this state, and it is the most natural form of scrying. Sit in front of the fire with no distractions, preferably in the dark, and stare into the fire meditating on the flames. Ensure you are not too close to burn your eyes or breathe in smoke but sit and see what messages come into your head while staring at the fire. Write down after sitting for an extended period.

Smoke Sigils

Smoke is a potent messenger, and the beauty of smoke dancing has enamored cultures for as long as fire has burned. Smoke can be dark and heavy or light and whispy, but the smoke has messages to send and stories to tell the trined scryers eye no matter what consistency. The different consistency levels in smoke can inform the importance of light smoke for gentle guidance, where thick dark smoke could be a more transformative and vital message needing to get across.

Eye Contact Gazing

Eye Contact Gazing is the most intimate form of scrying. It is often referred to as soul gazing, which sounds very intrusive but can be beautiful to experience with a trusted magickal partner. This act is done by sitting across from someone and keeping intense eye contact. Let messages flow from their soul and power center to see what messages and feelings arise.

Witches can do fortune-telling readings with many different scrying methods, but whichever one you use makes sure to focus hard on the specific images that come up in your mind’s eye and not always exactly what the eyes see. Clear the mind of any chatter and focus on the message you hope to achieve, which may take a half-hour or could take hours. It could also take numerous scrying forms and try to get the most precise message, especially if it is essential to you. After each Scrying session, you should try to describe what the messages mean by writing them in a book of shadows or journal and then analyzing any correlations. Journaling the results also helps make sure if you use different scrying forms, you can compare and see any similarities in the images raised in each method. Scrying has been used for centuries but is still a mysterious part of magick for even seasoned witches. The messages interpretations that come up from the scrying ritual are all the seers’ accounts, so it is best to trust intuition on what the messages mean and never swayed by any other accounts.

Scrying Ritual

It is the same with the method as trying many different forms can help get into the practice. I, for one, have fallen in love with my obsidian mirror as I love the protection, and it brings me great peace to stare into the mirror or my sphere and meditate into the imagery. Many witches prefer hydromancy and just using a bowl of water. Still, I have to use another method of scrying with the mirror as I have not developed the connection to water like I have to other methods, but it is to each its own. I encourage using a bowl of water for this practice to start since everyone has a bowl lying around the house, and it is an easy way to dip your toe into scrying. I enjoy using my scrying mirror in tandem with my bowl, so feel free to grab a mirror and set it next to your bowl to get possible peripheral images. As I think, the more visuals I can see, the more messages I can receive. A black bowl of water works best, but any other dark color or wood preferable for the scrying practice to get the best reflection in the water.

Cleanse your Space and Cast the Circle

Before beginning the act of scrying, makes sure to cleanse the space with sage or whatever item you wish to use to cleanse. Also, make sure to open and close the circle before scrying. The screen can channel energies and open portals to the other side like many divination tools, so it is best You always close and open the circle when dealing with spirits and casting. Light candles with intention and invoke any deities or ancestors you would like to include in the ritual to assist or provide protection.

Create the Vessel

The first step in the ritual is to fill the bowl with whatever water of your choice or leave it out to collect rainwater if blessed with rainstorms, and that will also bring in storm magick. Using dark bowls will contrast the images better, but dark colors are also suitable for bouncing off energy. Do the ritual in a darker room with candles as this will help with shadow and flickering light to create more images. You can put items like flower petals or other delicate items that float to help shape and create unique images in the water. It is all about experimentation and seeing what ideas come out and what they trigger for the witch.

Secondly, put items that do not float in the water like crystals or trinkets to channel the power energy through the crystals or ancestor energy to help with spirits and channeling. The item should be a bit larger and in the center of the bowl to draw the eyes focus. The item is where you will look and focus the mind partially on the while scrying.

The Meditative State

While scrying, the meditative state is an essential part of the vision process and is done by going into a meditative state or a trance. Achieve a trance state through active meditation, dancing, singing, or anything that helps you clear your mind before the act. Some brave souls even used psychoactive plants to see more visuals. Still, this witch does not recommend this method, but if desired and prepared, only use microdoses, or else the visual message will not be pure to the ritual. The visuals with psychoactive methods will be created from manipulating the mind under the influence and not from magickal means. The easiest way is to meditate for around five minutes before beginning the scrying to go into a trance.

The Magick of Looking

The last act of the scrying ritual is the looking part which is fascinating. The preparation takes work, but it is a full-scale ritual. The ritual’s visual aspect should be done by looking into the water and staring at the object at the bottom. It is best to let your face and eyes relax and barely be conscious of the space around you. Make sure to be free of any threat of distraction and focus on what you see. It is OK to look away every once to drop down items that may come up as You want to reflect on those items later. Make sure to acknowledge anything that comes into your head from the ritual and the spirits surrounding the magic. Nothing is trivial when it comes to describing, and every small image and trigger in the head could be the exact net message you need to her.

Journal in the Grimoire

We are visual creatures, so it is essential to write what you saw and felt while scrying to look at all of the thoughts and translate them into meaning. Many talented beings can do this all in their heads, but most need to see it all out on paper to bring visual interpretations. Journaling is also helpful if you would like to reflect on your magickal journi and track messages that may have a more significant meaning to your life down the line.

When you stare into the abyss, it will stare back, and that is what we are attempting to connect with when scrying is the depths of magick and the sense around us. Sitting in silence and staring allows the subtle message spirit and our guides have to channel through our power. There is a light in all beings and the ability to gain and nature second sight, and with practice on channeling the energy, anyone can help scrying and perform divination skills.
